Tumescence

Tumescence + Columbus

Many patients are concerned about the pain they may have with surgery and how long they will have to take pain medication during their recovery period. The plastic surgery literature is replete with studies which show that injection of tumescent fluid (dilute local anesthesia) at the time of surgery can dramatically reduce a patient’s pain immediately after surgery and during their recovery.  Patients who have tumescent injections take fewer narcotics, have fewer problems with nausea and vomiting after surgery and get back into normal activity quicker.  Dr. McMahan uses tumescent fluid with almost every procedure he performs.  It only takes a few minutes to perform at the time of surgery and there is no increase in cost. It is surprising that more surgeons don’t take the extra time and care to inject this fluid at surgery and provide their patients with this benefit.  It is hard to argue against using something that costs nothing and dramatically reduces pain with surgery.
