Protect Your Skin for the Winter

Moisturize your skin

  • Apply moisturizers early and often
  • Use oil-based ointments (petroleum jelly, glycerin or mineral oil)
  • Avoid water-based lotions and creams that can dry your skin
  • Avoid irritating chemicals such as preservatives and fragrances
  • Apply moisturizers while you skin is still damp from a showers
  • Moisturizers lock in your natural moisture more than adding moisture

Protect your skin

  • Make sure your home humidifier is working and the vent is open
  • Get a portable humidifier for your office or bedroom
  • Avoid drying peels, alcohol-based products and astringents
  • Avoid wet clothing and gloves
  • Use sunscreen even in the winter
  • Avoid hot baths and showers
  • Pat dry with a towel – don’t rub
  • Soap only as needed
  • Avoid body sponges
  • Dress in layers
  • Wear gloves (cotton is best)
