Breast augmentation surgery is normally performed under some form of anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. The type of anesthesia used for the procedure can take the form of an epidural anesthetic or a general anesthetic. Most patients who undergo a breast augmentation procedure typically have general anesthesia. The surgery starts with a small incision being made either in the crease underneath the breast, around the edge of the areola, or in the armpit. Then using this incision, a pocket is created to facilitate the insertion of the implants. The implants can be placed on top of the muscle but most plastic surgeons today prefer to have the implants placed underneath the muscle. Breast augmentation implants come in two forms. One is filled with saline and the other is filled with silicone. The decision as to which type a patient chooses primarily depends on his or her goals and concerns with the each type of implant. The advantages of saline implants are that they require a smaller incision and lower costs. In addition, identifying a saline implant rupture is much easier in comparison to that of a silicone implant. On the other hand, silicone implants are more expensive and are priced at around $1,000 a pair more that saline implants. Furthermore, with silicone implants, the initial incision has to be a little longer and the identification of an implant rupture is harder. As a matter of fact, currently, the FDA recommends patients who have opted for the silicone implants for their breast augmentation process to undergo an MRI every couple of years to look for any ruptures since it may be hard to identify a rupture by examination alone. Silicone implants have the advantage of a more natural feel, particularly in patients who have very little tissue to cover up the implants and they have a lower risk of rippling around the edge of the implant. A breast augmentation procedure normally concludes with the incisions being closed with sutures. Patients should expect to see the sutures removed after about a week following the surgery.
