The enhancement is carried out by inserting saline or silicone implants which are placed either underneath or on top of the chest muscle.
Breast augmentation surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under some form of anesthesia. The type of anesthetic used for this procedure can be either an epidural anesthetic or a general anesthetic. In most cases, general anesthesia is used. The surgery starts with a small incision which is made underneath the breast, in the crease underneath the breast, around the edge of the areola, or in the armpit. Following the incision, a pocket is created for the purpose of inserting the implant. Even though surgeons have the option of placing the implant on top of the muscle, in a majority of cases, it is placed underneath the muscle. Following the placement of the implants, the incisions are closed with sutures, which are usually removed in about a week after surgery. The implants used in a breast augmentation procedure are either saline or silicone. The decision of choosing the right type of implant primarily depends on the goals of the patient and the concerns he or she may have with each type of implant. The advantages of saline implants include a smaller incision, lower cost and the ease of identifying ruptures. Silicone implants on the other hand, are more expensive, costing nearly $1,100 per pair more than saline implants. Moreover, the required incision for silicone implants is a little bit larger and it can be relatively difficult to identify implant ruptures. Presently, the FDA recommends that all the patients who have silicone implants undergo an MRI scan every few years to determine any ruptures, since it may be hard to identify ruptures with an examination alone. Silicone implants have the advantage of a more natural feel and a lower risk of rippling compared to saline implants. |
