Why must I have an adult stay with me the first night?

There are a variety of reasons why it is important for a responsible adult to stay with patients who have undergone any surgery or procedure requiring the use of general anesthesia.

First and foremost, it is no surprise that there are risks with any type of surgery and the use of anesthesia. If a patient who has undergone a surgical procedure experiences a serious problem which requires urgent physician attention, the presence of a responsible adult to provide transportation is essential.

In addition, it is normal for some patients to be in a sedated state from the anesthesia used during the surgery or as a result of post-surgical pain relieving medication. In this situation, the presence of a responsible adult is vital to provide help with taking the proper amount of prescribed medication, walking to the bathroom and/or getting something to eat or drink.

It is important to understand that a patient who is sedated or in pain may not be able to follow proper directions to contact their physician in case of an emergency. As such, the presence of another adult is obviously important for the safety and well being of the patient.

Some of the more common surgical complications include infections, bleeding, blood clots, and reduced or poor wound healing. According to surgeons, most of the post-surgical complications are known to appear during the first three days following the procedure. It is during this period of time and prior to surgery that it is most important for patients to diligently follow their surgeons’ instructions to minimize such risks.
