What are the possible long term risks of breast augmentation surgery?

The long term risks of a breast augmentation surgery start with numbness to the nipple. However, it is not uncommon for patients to have some sort of temporary numbness or hyper-sensitivity to the nipples soon after the surgery. The more worrying concern is the long term loss of sensation and that can happen probably 10 to 15 percent of the time. The loss of sensation in the nipple has some bearing on the size of the implant used during the surgery. With the use of a large implant, a similarly larger pocket has to be created and as a result, it requires a slightly more extensive surgery which could increase the risk of numbness to the nipples.

Other long term concerns from breast augmentation surgery include capsular contracture, which refers to the scar tissue that forms around the implant. If this scar tissue compresses the implant, it can make the implant hard, which can in turn make the breast hard, resulting in a breast shape that may be unnatural while also causing discomfort. Capsular contracture has a significantly lower risk of occurrence when the implants are placed underneath the chest muscle. Moreover, it should be noted that saline implants generally have a lower risk of capsular contracture than silicone implants.

Lastly, the deflation of implants is also considered a longer term concern with breast augmentation procedures. However, breast implant deflation can occur within months of the procedure or in 30 years’ time. As a general rule, the current risk of deflation of implants that are being used in the procedures today is around one to two percent per year per implant. This naturally means that most patients will reap the benefits of their implants for at least 15 to 20 years prior to a deflation. It should be noted that both the implant producing companies offer a lifetime warranty for their products. If an implant ruptures, the patient will receive a replacement implant for free. Moreover, if the implant rupture takes place within the first 10 years, the saline implant company offers patients an additional $1,200 towards the cost of replacement while the silicone implant company offers up to $3,500.
