As with any type of surgery, the immediate risks with a breast augmentation procedure too start with the use of anesthesia. And it’s important that patients discuss the risks of anesthesia with the anesthesiologist prior to the surgery.

Bleeding is also a risk and therefore it is important that patients are mindful to avoid medications which can cause bleeding prior to the surgery. Such medications include aspirin, Ibuprofen and Vitamin E. Moreover, patients who smoke should avoid the habit a few weeks prior to the surgery so that bleeding related complications can be avoided.

Among all of the immediate risks associated with a breast implant surgery, infection is one of the biggest. If a placed breast implant gets infected, it is absolutely necessary to remove it immediately. Moreover, patients will have to be without an implant for a period of about three to four months before another procedure can be done. Therefore, most cosmetic surgeons put their patients on antibiotics for at least a short period of time before the date of the surgery.

Some breast augmentation patients can also experience some temporary numbness or hyper sensitivity in their nipples following the surgery. In addition, some patients can even suffer from longer term numbness. Normally, longer term nipple numbness occurs around 10 to 15 percent of the time. This condition is somewhat related to the size of the implant used in the procedure. If a larger implant is used, a larger pocket will need to be created, making the procedure slightly more extensive. This can, as a result, cause a higher risk of nipple numbness in patients.

Some other longer term risks of a breast augmentation procedure include conditions like capsular contracture and implant deflation.

Capsular contracture refers to the scar which forms around the implant. If this scar tissue compresses the implant and make the implant hard, it could make the breast hard, resulting in an undesirable breast shape and discomfort.

Even though it is a risk, implant deflation is one that occurs rarely, around one to two percent per year per implant.
