What is the recovery period like after a breast lift?

Also known as a mastopexy, a breast lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure which involves the lifting of breasts by elevating them on the patient’s chest. Normally, this process further involves the lifting of the nipple and the areola to a higher position, as well.

Generally, for patients who undergo a breast lift surgery without a combination of any other procedure such as a breast augmentation, the recovery time tends to be fairly minimal. Since a breast lift is primarily a skin related operation and there’s very little amount of work done on the breast tissue while nothing is done to the muscle of the chest, the majority of the patients have relatively minimal discomfort after surgery. Moreover, patients can expect to be back at work within a few days’ time and they can return to full activities within about a week to ten days.

Breast lift surgery is normally performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. There are different types of breast lift surgeries available depending on the degree of breast sagging. There are very small breast lift procedures where only a minute amount of skin in the shape of a ‘quarter moon’ is removed from above the areola, resulting in the slight lifting of the nipple. Slightly larger mastopexy procedures involve the removal of a donut shape of skin which results in the lifting of the nipple to a slightly higher position without complete lifting of the breast. A standard breast lift procedure involves the removal of skin from the lower aspect of the breast and the repositioning of the nipple to a higher position. Generally, the removed portion of skin sometimes includes a part of the outer aspect of the areola in an effort to make it smaller in circumstances where the areola has stretched out as a result of breastfeeding making it abnormally large for the breast.
