What are the risks associated with liposuction surgery?

Normally, the standard risks associated with the liposuction procedure include bleeding, infection and anesthesia related issues.

The risk of bleeding is typically very minimal in liposuction procedures which use the tumescent technique, where a solution of dilute local anesthetic with epinephrine is inserted prior to the procedure to constrict the blood vessels. In order to minimize risks, patients are also advised by surgeons to avoid any medications which can cause thinning of the blood prior to the surgery. Such medications include aspirin and Ibuprofen. To reduce the risk of infection, most surgeons will put patients on antibiotics around the time of surgery, at least for a short period of time.

In addition to the above, there are certain other liposuction associated risks that patients should know about. Patients who do not have young elastic skin are at risk for developing irregular contours of the skin or ripples in the skin. Hence, it is very important that the surgeon performs a thorough evaluation of a patient’s skin beforehand, so that there will be credible confirmation that the skin will respond well to the surgery. In this evaluation process, the most crucial area is the abdomen, where sometimes the skin can be stretched out and will not respond well to the liposuction procedure. For such patients, a surgical procedure like a tummy tuck is a far better option than a liposuction; particularly if those patients with loose skin and stretch marks.

Recovery

Most patients who undergo liposuction surgery do not have go through a lot during the recovery stages. Only a minimal amount of restrictions are imposed on a liposuction patient because the surgeons are not worried about the tearing of stitches or sutures placed in the muscle. Hence, most patients will be back to doing their regular activities within a few days after the surgery. The biggest restriction following a liposuction procedure is to refrain from soaking in a bath or a hot tub since it directs heat over the area that has been treated, and as a result can cause a significant amount of swelling. Showering is generally allowed the day after surgery.
