Liposuction is ideal for people who are young, healthy, close to their ideal body weight, and have elastic skin with pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Even though you don’t have to have these ideal conditions to undergo liposuction, those who have such circumstances will get the best results. Younger patients with elastic skin tend to recover nicely with very little evidence of the surgery. It is advised that patients lose as much excess weight as they can prior to the surgery. If patients are able to do that, surgeons can concentrate more on the fat that the patients are unable to lose rather than the fat they could have lost on their own. There are several techniques used to perform liposuction. Most cosmetic surgeons use the technique known as the ‘tumescent’ liposuction which involves inserting fluid into the area to be treated which reduces bleeding and pain after surgery. In addition, some newer techniques have been developed to remove fat that is more resistant to the standard liposuction procedure. One of the most resistant areas for standard liposuction is male breasts. Other resistant areas of the body include areas which were previously subjected to liposuction. These areas provide some resistance to the standard procedure due to the development of scar tissue. One of the most common techniques used to take out resistant fat is known as ‘ultrasonic liposuction.’ In this technique, the instrument vibrates at a very high speed, causing the fat cells to rupture and get removed as a liquid instead of solid clumps of fat. Following liposuction, surgeons don’t put many restrictions on patients since they are not worried about tearing of stitches or sutures that are placed in the muscle during other procedures such as tummy tucks or breast implant surgery. Hence, most patients will be back to their normal activities within a few days. However, there is one big restriction for liposuction patients. They are advised not to soak in a bath or a hot tub since it directs heat over the areas that were treated during the procedure, which can lead to swelling. |
