Ultrasonic Liposuction Columbus Ohio - What Is Ultrasonic Liposuction?
In the over-whelming majority of fat removal procedures, standard tumescent liposuction is the best surgical technique. Since the mid 1990’s various other forms of liposuction have been developed and each one is initially touted as the best method of fat removal. Many of these procedures are just gimmicks and do not stand up to the hype.
Ultrasonic liposuction was the first non-standard liposuction technique developed; it has shown the best promise and has stood the test of time better than the others.
Standard liposuction involves making small incisions and filling the area with a wetting solution composed of dilute local anesthetic and epinephrine to reduce pain and bleeding (tumescent technique). A long, hollow, narrow stainless-steel canula connected to suction tubing is inserted into the incision and guided back and forth as negative pressure draws small clumps of fat out through the canula and tubing into a collection basin.
The ultrasonic technique also includes small incisions and infiltration of a wetting solution. A long, narrow, more rigid, hollow titanium canula attached to the suction tubing and electronic hand-piece vibrates and 10,000 cycles per second in addition to being guided back and forth more slowly through the fat. As it vibrates, the tip forces fat cells to rupture allowing the fat to be removed more as a liquid. Ultrasonic liposuction is particularly beneficial in situations where fat may be resistant to standard liposuction. This situation is most commonly found in male abdomens, repeat liposuctions and enlarged male breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia.
Laser has most recently been added as a modality to liquefy fat during the liposuction process in a fashion similar to the ultrasonic technique. The laser uses the conversion of light energy to heat energy to rupture fat cells prior to their removal. This heat also creates an internal burn to the tissues, often resulting in more pain, more swelling and a longer recovery than with standard liposuction.
