Plastic Surgery Ears Ohio - Is Otoplasty Surgery Permanent?

The goal of Otoplasty surgery is to permanently alter the shape and prominence of the ears to a natural appearing contour and no obvious signs of surgery.

Since cartilage has natural memory, the tendency is for it to try and go back to its original appearance and shape. To prevent this from happening, a variety of procedures are performed during an Otoplasty. Scoring of the cartilage consists of making small, fine, partial-thickness cuts into the cartilage along the line of a desired fold or curve. This weakens the cartilage and allows it to bend easier, reducing its ability fold back to its original shape.

Permanent sutures are commonly used to recreate natural folds in the ear which may have been underdeveloped or lacking completely, contributing to an unnatural shape or excessive prominence. These sutures are also used to hold the back of the ears closer to the scalp, reducing their projection to a normal level. These sutures are generally invisible and can only occasionally be felt.

Removal of a portion of cartilage near the base of the ear is another way to reduce the spring of the cartilage, allow the ears to fold back and reduce the risk of recurrent excessive prominence. Following this resection, the remaining edges of the cartilage are sewn together, usually with absorbable sutures.

Most often, a combination of the above techniques are used to create the desired contour and projection of the ears and reduce recurrence of the original deformity. Strict protection of the ears from trauma for several weeks is also important so that the stitches which are holding the cartilage in place while it heals are not broken or pulled out. After 6-8 weeks, enough internal scar tissue has formed so that relatively minor trauma to the ears should not contribute to recurrence.
