Post Operative Instructions

WOUND CARE:

• Keep your dressings on for at least 24 hours.
• If you have no drains, you may then remove the dressings and shower over the incisions.
• If you have surgical tapes over the incisions, leave them in place.
• Do not use ointments on your incisions unless instructed to do so.
• Keep your arms wrapped with the elastic wraps or the surgical garment at all times except when showering.  They should not be tight.
• After four days, you may leave the garment off long enough to wash it.

• Keep your arms elevated on pillows as much as possible.
• Avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks.

• Start with clear liquids and advance to a regular diet as tolerated.

• Take your pain medication as directed. If you do not need it, do not take it.  Cut back as your pain improves or if it makes you too drowsy.
• You may switch to Tylenol at any time.
• Avoid aspirin containing products.
• It is advisable to take a laxative and extra fiber such as Metamucil while you are taking the pain medications.

PROBLEMS:

• If you have any problems, such as:
  1. Excessive drainage
  2. Excessive pain or swelling
  3. Fever over 100 degrees Fahrenheit
  4. Calf pain, ankle swelling or difficulty breathing
  5. Numbness in you hands or fingers
