Post Operative Instructions

WOUND CARE:

• Leave the compression garment in place.  You may remove it temporarily to wash it, to shower or to use the restroom.
• You may remove the garment to shower on the day after surgery.  Remove the Band-Aids and leave the incisions uncovered.
• You may have some drainage through some of the incisions; this will stop within 24 hours.
• DO NOT apply ointment to the incisions.
• You may apply ice to the areas treated for 24-36 hours.

• Take it easy for several days.
• Do not drive or perform strenuous activity for one week.

• Start with liquids and light foods at first and advance to a regular diet as tolerated.

• Take your prescribed pain medication as directed.  If you do not need the pain medication, do not take it. Cut back as your pain improves or if you become too drowsy.
• You may supplement with Tylenol as needed.
• Take your antibiotics as directed.
• It is advisable to take a stool softener and extra fiber such as Metamucil while taking the pain medications.
• Do not take aspirin containing products.

PROBLEMS:

• If you have any problems, such as:
  1. Excessive drainage.
  2. Excessive pain or swelling
  3. Fever over 100 degrees Fahrenheit
  4. Calf pain, ankle swelling or difficulty breathing.
