Post Operative Instructions

WOUND CARE:

• Keep the dressings on until they are removed in the office.
• It is normal to have some bloody drainage on the dressing.
• If you have drains in place, empty them and record the output every eight hours.  Remember to keep the drain bulb compressed and allow it to expand as it draws the fluid out.
• You may shower the day after the drains are removed.
• Once the sutures are removed, leave the tapes on as long as they will stay.  After they come off, you may apply Vitamin E daily.

• You must avoid strenuous activity for several weeks.
• Avoid sitting upright for at least two weeks.
• Move your feet and legs frequently after surgery.

• Start with liquids and advance to a regular diet as tolerated.

• Take your pain medication as directed.  Cut down on it as your pain improves or if it makes you too drowsy.  
• You may switch to Tylenol at any time.
• Take your antibiotics as prescribed.
• It is advisable to take a laxative and extra fiber such as Metamucil while taking the pain medication.

PROBLEMS:

• If you have any problems, such as:
  1. Excessive drainage.
  2. Excessive pain or swelling
  3. Fever over 100 degrees Fahrenheit
  4. Calf pain, ankle swelling or difficulty breathing
