Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a common procedure in cosmetic surgery to re-shape the nose in proportion to the facial profile. It may seem a minor procedure, but it involves intricate sculpting of the nose and should only be performed by qualified plastic surgeons. Many experienced surgeons believe that good rhinoplasty is a science, and that great rhinoplasty is an art. The nose is crucial to the aesthetics of the face because of its prominent location. Therefore, a slight change to the nose can result in a dramatic difference to a person’s appearance but not all changes will be so prominent. Often times, the changes made with a rhinoplasty are much more subtle so that only the patient and their close friends and family are aware of the difference.

Anyone who is unhappy with the shape or size of his or her nose may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty. The most appropriate candidate is a person who suffers from obvious irregularities of the nose which can adversely affect the overall appearance and even the personality of such a person. Even if the rest of the facial features and body are in excellent shape, but the nose is awkwardly shaped, the attention of other people will be drawn towards it.

Experienced plastic surgeons recommend this procedure for anyone who has attained full growth and development of the nose, and wishes to improve the shape or change the size of their nose. It is generally a one-time procedure and the results usually last forever. Therefore, it makes good sense to undergo the procedure at a healthy youthful age so that the benefits can be enjoyed for many years.

Patients who have a bump on the dorsum or bridge of the nose may need to have it removed. Some people have a thick or flat or wide nasal tip that may need to be narrowed or more defined. These are some of the most common conditions that can be corrected with rhinoplasty surgery. Ethnicity also plays an important role in the shaping of the nose. A successful rhinoplasty can have a significant positive effect on the personality and self-confidence of patients who come from ethnic backgrounds without losing their ethnicity.
