Tattoo Removal

Tattoo art is very popular today among both men and women. However, statistics reveal that almost 50 percent of those who have a tattoo wish to have it removed some time later. Tattoos can be removed either fully or partially, depending on the individual’s choice.

The following are the key methods of tattoo removal:

Laser Removal:

A laser produces brief pulses of intense light that go through the superficial layers of the skin without causing any harm to it. The energy released by this light causes fragmentation of the tattoo pigment. Once fragmented, the pigment gets removed automatically by the body’s immune system. The sharp focus of the laser ensures that only the targeted pigment area is affected, and not the surrounding surface of the skin.

Laser technology is the most popular method of tattoo removal. In many cases, the tattoo may not get removed in a single treatment. It may require repeated laser treatments to remove the pigment completely. But the operating doctor must use laser exposure conservatively in order to protect the patient against unnecessary damage to the skin.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy:

IPL or Intense Pulsed Light is a dermal enhancer solution for tattoo removal. The only difference here is that instead of using a laser, it uses a high intensity light. The principle of tattoo removal remains the same as in the case of the laser. However, some people believe that IPL therapy is a less painful option compared to laser treatment. This advanced treatment is usually more expensive than laser treatment as well.

Other treatment options:

There are also certain medical options available, apart from laser and IPL therapy. But these methods are believed to be more painful and less effective in comparison to a laser. Dermabrasion is one such technique that actually “sand-papers” the upper skin layer with the help of abrasive friction. Skin excision is another method where the tattoo is simply cut out and then the skin is stitched back together.

Dr. James McMahan has been providing laser assisted cosmetic treatments with excellent results for his patients. He can help remove tattoos in an efficient and conservative manner, without letting the surrounding skin area suffer.
