Are there risks and complications to a tummy tuck? Also known as an abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck is a surgical procedure which involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the stomach, and the tightening of the abdominal muscles to flatten the stomach area.
One of the most common risks of a tummy tuck procedure is bleeding. Therefore, surgeons strictly advise tummy tuck surgical patients to avoid medications such as aspirin and Ibuprofen for about two weeks prior to the surgery. Infection is a relatively low risk with tummy tuck surgery and most surgeons try to reduce the risk of this from happening by administering antibiotics for several days around the date of the surgery. As with any other surgery, anesthesia is also a risk and patients are encouraged avoid smoking since it can enhance the risk of pneumonia when under the influence of anesthesia. Moreover, smoking can cause a loss of skin as a result of nicotine constricting the blood vessels which go to the skin on the abdomen that has been undermined and tightened. One of the most serious and biggest risks of a tummy tuck surgery is the possibility of the formation of blood clots in the patient’s legs. These blood clots have the ability to break off and travel up to the heart and lungs. Such a condition and complication is one of the serious things that can happen with any type of surgery, but is more prone in overweight and inactive surgery patients. In order to prevent this condition, many surgeons will have their patients on medication to slightly thin their blood around the time of the surgery. Moreover, patients will be equipped with special stockings on their legs which will massage their legs to prevent the formation of blood clots during the surgical procedure. Following the completion of the surgery, patients are encouraged to move their feet, legs and get up and walk around to prevent any blood clots from forming. |
