Once again, I had another patient in my office today who is suffering from the effects of a laser treatment done by a physician who is not a plastic surgeon and has little, if any, training in aesthetic procedures.

Unfortunately, state medical boards, in general, do not require physicians to work in their area of expertise. Once you have MD or DO behind your name, you can do almost anything that you want. If you want to operate or do procedures at an accredited hospital or surgery center, however, you generally do have to prove that you have had legitimate training. That is why most of these “plastic surgeon wanna-be’s” virtually always only work in their office.

The patient I just saw has a face that looks like a patch-work quilt due to the permanent scarring and loss of pigmentation due to the laser treatment.

She didn’t do her homework first to make sure that she was seeing a physician who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and actually trained to perform the procedure. Waiting until after your surgery or procedure is too late!

Make sure that your plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In fact, do this even before your consultation.
