Many patients fall victim to creative advertising with respect to who they go to, what procedures they have and what medications to take. One common area where patients purchase expensive treatments or apply useless products for improved results is scar therapy. Plastic surgeons that care about their results try to make scars as inconspicuous as possible by hiding their incisions, making them along natural skin lines, sticking to buried absorbable sutures when possible and advising their patients on what to use after surgery to reduce scar formation. There is no scientific evidence that Vitamin E, coconut oil or expensive commonly advertised scar products do much, if anything, to reduce scarring. Probably the cheapest, most effective and easiest scar reduction technique is persistent taping over the scars for several months after surgery. For patients who may have allergic reactions to the adhesive in the tape, the next best product that is just as effective but more expensive is silicone sheeting which can be purchased over the counter in most pharmacies.
