There are many physicians who advertise in Columbus that they are plastic surgeons when, in fact, they have little, if any training in plastic surgery. Unfortunately, the public is mostly unaware of the qualifications necessary to be a good plastic surgeon and the State Medical Board does very little to limit what types of procedures that a physician can do. Hospitals and surgery centers (not owned by the physician) generally require that a physician be trained and certified by a proper board to allow them to work and operate in a specific field of surgery. For plastic surgery, the only legitimate board is The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS); there are many fake boards that these physicians will try to claim as authentic…do not buy it! You can check out your surgeon by going to the ABPS website at: www.abplsurg.org. Virtually all surgeons that are truly board certified are members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons; their website is www.plasticsurgery.org. If you are considering cosmetic plastic surgery, you can go one step further. To make sure that you are seeing a board certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in cosmetic surgery, check out your surgeon with the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Their website is www.surgery.org.

Do not wait until after surgery to check out your surgeon! By then it is too late.
