Fraxel® Laser has created a revolution in the field of laser-based cosmetic treatments. It helps make a person appear rejuvenated and youthful, and reduces the effects of aging. People who suffer from sun damage, wrinkles or facial lines can achieve amazing results with a series of treatments. The recovery period after the treatment is also fairly short, so the patient can resume normal activities quickly with revitalized skin and a renewed zest for life.
Fraxel® Laser treatment aims at manipulating tiny volumes of the tissue in the target surface area of the skin. The microscopic wounds within the skin result in a wound healing process that causes coagulation of collagen fibers in the skin. In effect, the skin that has been cracked, sunburnt or wrinkled simply due to aging regains its youthfulness and results in an improved appearance. The effect of several Fraxel® laser treatments is generation of new elastic and collagen fibers in the dermis that have been lost through aging and sun exposure.
Fraxel® "Re:store" is a noninvasive treatment that can be used for treating mildly to severely sun damaged skin. The treatment includes a series of three to six procedures, which are typically done at four to six week intervals. Downtime after a session depends on how aggressive the treatment session is. There is generally no bleeding, scabbing, oozing or bruising with the treatment. You are pink and swollen for about three days for a lower level treatment and five days for more aggressive treatments. Immediately after a Fraxel® laser treatment, you feel like you have a sunburn; you can actually feel the heat radiating off of your face. For the next 48 hours, you should keep your head elevated as much as possible and liberally use ice packs on your skin. The better you follow these instructions, the less swelling you have and the faster you will recover.
Fraxel® treatments help with fine lines, age spots, sun spots, hyperpigmentation, sun damage and acne scarring. Patients notice that the tone of their skin is more even and the texture is smoother.
Fraxel® laser treatments are performed in the office using both topical and local anesthesia. A topical anesthetic gel is placed on the face for one hour, after which, lidocaine is injected in several areas to ease the discomfort of the treatment. In addition, an assistant blows ice-cold air onto the areas being treated throughout the procedure. A full-face treatment takes about twenty minutes.
The Fraxel® laser can be used on almost any area of the body for skin rejuvenation. Common areas other than the face include the neck, chest and hands. Because of the limitation of the amount of topical anesthetic that can be used, only two body areas (such as face and neck or chest and hands) can be done at one sitting.
Dr. McMahan has extensive experience with Fraxel® laser treatments and will determine what laser settings will be best for you depending on your skin type, degree of sun damage, extent of facial lines and what you are trying to achieve.
